Best Pet Stain Removers for Carpet
Compare five pet stain removers for carpet by stain type and formula, plus how to treat fresh and old stains and when a spot cleaner machine helps.
The right pet stain remover for carpet depends on what made the mess. Enzyme formulas are the usual choice for urine that has soaked in, while oxygen-type sprays suit visible stains from vomit, poop and mud. The five picks below cover both types, and the table shows which is which. Every product detail comes from the maker’s label or product page, so follow the directions on the bottle you buy.
These picks are based on manufacturer information and published guidance from animal organizations. You can read more on our how we research page.
Check a Hidden Spot First
Before you treat a visible stain, try the product on a hidden area of the carpet, such as inside a closet or under a piece of furniture. The Rocco & Roxie directions call for a colorfastness check on a hidden area and say to stop if color shows on the cloth. The Nature’s Miracle label also says to check the fabric for colorfastness. Oxygen-type cleaners deserve the same caution.
Wool and other natural fibers need extra care. Simple Solution’s cat formula label says it is not for wool or leather, so do not assume any stain remover suits wool. Read the care tag on your carpet and the product label, and contact the carpet maker if you are unsure.
Our Picks
For urine on wall-to-wall carpet: Rocco & Roxie Enzyme Stain & Odor Eliminator
This is a good fit when the main problem is urine on carpet. The label lists carpets, floors, furniture, clothing, litter boxes, kennels and carriers, so one 32 fl oz bottle can also cover crate and carrier cleanup.
Key specs (per the manufacturer):
- Labeled bio-enzymatic and “Enzyme Activated”, 32 fl oz.
- Listed ingredients: water, advanced biological blend, non-ionic surfactant and odor counteractant.
- Label lists urine, feces and vomit.
- Directions: shake gently, check colorfastness on a hidden area, and first remove as much of the stain or urine as possible with an absorbent towel.
- According to the maker, it carries the CRI Seal of Approval, a Carpet and Rug Institute program that evaluates the performance of carpet cleaning products and machines. We have not cross-checked this against CRI’s list.
Consider: The directions ask you to blot up as much as you can before applying, so it works best after you have lifted the fresh mess. If your carpet is wool, check the care tag and the label first.
For old urine that soaked into the pad: Simple Solution Extreme Stain & Odor Remover
The directions on this one are built around a soak method, which suits older urine spots that have likely reached the backing and padding. It lists carpet, upholstery and bedding on the label.
Key specs (per the manufacturer):
- Label describes enzymes and Pro-Bacteria.
- Label lists urine, feces and vomit.
- Sold in 32 oz and 1 gal sizes.
- Directions (Amazon label): saturate the soiled area. On carpet, cover twice the size of the mess and saturate the backing and padding.
- Wait 5 or more minutes, blot with a color-safe cloth, then let it dry naturally.
Consider: Saturating the backing and padding takes a lot of product and a long, natural dry time. The cat version’s label says not for wool or leather, so check the label of the exact bottle you buy.
For vomit, poop and muddy paws: Resolve Ultra Pet Carpet Cleaner Spray
This is a non-enzyme spray aimed at visible stains more than odor. Its label lists feces, vomit, dirt and odors, on carpets, upholstery and area rugs, which matches the messes that leave a mark rather than a smell.
Key specs (per the manufacturer):
- Label names “Oxi + Odor Stop technology” rather than enzymes, 32 oz spray.
- Label lists feces, vomit, dirt and odors.
- Label lists carpets, upholstery and area rugs.
- The label says it is “suitable for use around cats & dogs when used as directed,” so read the directions before use.
- The maker publishes ingredients at rbnainfo.com.
Consider: Because this is an oxygen-type cleaner, check colorfastness on a hidden spot first. For old urine odor, one of the enzyme options above is a better match.
For mud and mixed household stains: BISSELL PET PRO OXY Stain Destroyer for Carpet and Upholstery
This two-pack of 22 oz bottles covers pet messes and ordinary household spills in one product, which helps if mud, food and drink stains show up as often as pet accidents.
Key specs (per the manufacturer):
- Oxy formula, not enzyme-based. Sold as a 22 oz 2-pack (model 17739).
- Label lists urine, mud, blood, pet stains, wine and food.
- Label lists carpet and upholstery.
- Label says it uses biodegradable detergents with no heavy metals or dyes.
- One sprayer is included with the two-pack, so you move the trigger to the second bottle.
Consider: With only one sprayer, you will need to swap the trigger when the first bottle runs out. As with any oxy cleaner, check a hidden area first.
For dog messes plus crates: Nature’s Miracle Advanced Platinum Dog Stain & Odor Remover
This one suits owners who want a single bottle for carpet and for hard pet areas. Its label lists carpets, pet areas, crates, carriers, bedding, toys and litter boxes, and also lists it as a disinfectant.
Key specs (per the manufacturer):
- 32 oz bottle (P-98180-1) from Spectrum Brands.
- Label says it contains a dilute oxidizing agent, so it is not an enzyme formula.
- Label lists carpets, pet areas, crates, carriers, bedding, toys and litter boxes.
- The label says to check fabric for colorfastness.
- The label says not to mix with vinegar or acidic cleaners, and to use it only as the label directs.
Consider: The disinfectant use comes with its own label directions, so read them before using it on crates or toys. Never combine it with vinegar-based cleaners.

How to Treat a Fresh vs. Old Pet Stain
A fresh accident
For a wet accident, Humane World for Animals advises laying a thick layer of paper over the spot, topping it with thick newspaper, and standing on it for about a minute. Repeat until the area is only damp, then rinse with cool, clean water and blot dry. The same guide says to skip ammonia and vinegar, because a strong chemical smell may encourage a pet to mark the spot again. Once most of the moisture is gone, apply your stain remover according to its label.
For vomit or feces, lift or scrape up the solids first, then blot and follow the product label. That is general practical guidance, and the Rocco & Roxie directions likewise ask you to remove as much as possible with an absorbent towel before applying.
A dried or old stain
The AKC says a dried stain should be rewet and extracted: rinse with water, pull it out with a wet-dry vacuum, and repeat. It adds that an enzyme cleaner made for pet stains is the next step if odor lingers, and that steam cleaners should be avoided because heat can set the stain and odor permanently. Humane World also suggests renting a carpet cleaner for set-in stains, and finding old spots with your nose or a black light. For how enzyme formulas work and which suit urine, see our guide to enzyme cleaners for pet urine.
If urine has soaked into the padding, Humane World notes the job gets harder and part of the carpet and pad may need replacing. If accidents keep happening, talk to your veterinarian to rule out a medical cause.
Spot Cleaner Machines
A portable spot cleaner fits the rinse-and-extract step described above. Whether you own one or rent one, use cool tap water, since the guidance on urine is to avoid heat and steam. Renting is the option Humane World mentions for set-in stains.
For rinsing and extracting old spots: BISSELL Little Green Multi-Purpose Portable Carpet Cleaner (1400B)
This corded portable machine sprays, scrubs and suctions, which makes it a match for rewetting an old urine spot and pulling the liquid back out.
Key specs (per the manufacturer):
- Corded, with a 9.7 lb weight per the listing.
- Dimensions per the listing: 8.25 inches deep, 17.25 inches wide and 12.5 inches tall.
- 48 oz clean water tank (per the listing).
- Listed accessories include a tough stain tool, a trial formula and a HydroRinse tool.
Consider: The cord limits how far you can work from an outlet, and you carry the machine and fill it by hand. Check the manual for which formulas and water it allows.
For machine use: BISSELL PET PRO OXY Spot & Stain Formula for Portable Carpet Cleaners
This is a machine formula, not a hand spray. It is made for BISSELL and other leading portable deep cleaners, so it suits owners who already have, or plan to rent, a portable machine.
Key specs (per the manufacturer):
- 32 oz bottle (model 2034).
- Oxy formula, not enzyme-based.
- Labeled for use in BISSELL and other leading portable deep cleaners.
- Label mentions StainProtect.
Consider: It only works with a portable cleaner, and it is an oxy formula, so it will not stand in for an enzyme cleaner on urine odor. Confirm your machine’s manual allows third-party formulas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a pet stain remover for carpet need enzymes?
Not always. In this list, Rocco & Roxie and Simple Solution Extreme are the enzyme formulas, while the others are oxygen-type products by their labels. The AKC points to enzyme cleaners made for pet stains when odor lingers after a stain is cleaned up.
Can I use these on a couch?
Some labels list upholstery, including Simple Solution, Resolve and BISSELL, and Rocco & Roxie lists furniture. Check the cleaning tag on your couch and try the product on a hidden spot first. For hair, see our guide to removing pet hair from couches, clothes and car seats.
What about dog bedding and crate pads?
Rocco & Roxie, Simple Solution and Nature’s Miracle all list bedding on their labels. Always follow the fabric care label on the bed itself, and see how to clean a dog bed for washing tips.
Should I use a steam cleaner on pet urine?
Both the AKC and Humane World advise against it. Heat can set the stain and odor permanently, so use cool water and an extractor or wet-dry vacuum instead.
Are these products safe around pets?
Only the maker’s own wording applies. For example, the Resolve label says it is “suitable for use around cats & dogs when used as directed.” Read and follow the label on any product, and ask your veterinarian if you have concerns about a specific pet.
Why does my pet keep returning to the same spot?
The AKC notes that leftover odor can draw a dog back to the same place, and Humane World says a pet may keep returning as long as it can smell its own scent there. Frequent accidents are worth a conversation with your veterinarian to rule out a medical cause.
